About the Franchise:
Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) is a franchise cricket team based out of Delhi that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team’s home ground is Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi formerly known as Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Currently, the team is coached by Ricky Ponting. The Capitals appeared in their first IPL final in 2020.
The inaugural tournament was held in 2008, in which BCCI finalized a list of eight teams who participated in the tournament. The teams represented eight different cities in India, including Delhi. The teams were put up for auction in the year 2008, and the Delhi capitals squad was bought by GMR Group for US$84 million (as per the reports).
Delhi Capitals Valuation:
As per reports the DC franchise is currently valued around 1 billion and it is jointly owned by GMR & JSW group.
Delhi Capitals Name change:
In December 2018, the team changed its name from the Delhi Daredevils to the Delhi Capitals. The reason for changing the name could be because of “Delhi is the power centre of the country, it is the capital, therefore the name Delhi Capitals”
Victory lap of DC:
During the inaugural edition of the IPL, the team with former name ‘Delhi Daredevils’ won their initial two matches against the Rajasthan Royals and the Deccan Chargers. Then, after losing a match to the Kings XI Punjab, the team won their next two matches against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings.
However, the Delhi Daredevils lost in four straight matches, breaking the streak with a win against the Deccan Chargers. After another loss against the Kings XI Punjab, they recovered and won three matches to finish in the final four of the league. The Delhi Daredevils lost to the champions, the Rajasthan Royals, in the semi-finals where the franchise RR clinches the title in the year 2008.
In 2009, it’s a Dejavu for the Delhi Daredevils squad where they once again lost in Semi Finals against the Deccan Charges (former team in the IPL and now it’s SRH) in Centurion South Africa by 6 wickets.
In 2020, Delhi Capitals have added some key players like Jason Roy, Chris Woakes. Shimron Hetmyer. and Marcus Stoinis from the Auction. Shortly after the Auction and before the tournament begins Chris Wakes ruled out of the tournament and he was replaced by another bowler from South Africa Anrich Nortje. The unpredictable squad continues where Jason Roy became the second player from the franchise to be ruled out of the tournament due to injury concerns and personal reasons, he was however replaced by Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams.
In 2020, the franchise started their string very well by winning 7 out of their first 9 games. This was the most successful season for Delhi Capitals in the IPL history since its inception from 2008. In this season, all games were played in the UAE. The Franchise had put up a fantastic show against Mumbai Indians and won the Runners Up title in the season 2020, they lost in the final by 5 wickets.
Home ground: Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium
The home venue for the DC is the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium, New Delhi. The stadium capacity is 41,000 seats approximately and is maintained by the Delhi & District Cricket Association, famously called as DDCA.
It was one of the oldest cricket stadium in the world, was established in 1883 as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, and named after the nearby Kotla fort. It is the second oldest functional international cricket stadium, after the Eden Gardens of Kolkata.

The franchise also have the modern Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur as their second home ground, however they haven’t played any matches there since 2016.
DC’s Coach and Captaincy:
Ricky Ponting is the Coach for Delhi Capitals since 2018, Rishabh Pant was made as the captain for the DC following a shoulder injury for the appointed captain Shreyas lver in the year 2021.
After taking the captaincy in 2021, Rishabh Pant spearheaded the team to the top of the table out of 8 teams in the league. Delhi Capitals squad had won 10 out of their 14 matches but lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the playoffs. Though they lost, there were lot of take aways from the season where Shikhar Dhawan scored the most runs for the team and Avesh Khan was the top wicket taker in the season for the Franchise. The unit believed in their potential and played like a champions in the tournament.
Last year in 2022 IPL season, Rishabh Pant met with a horrible accident and still in the recovering stage and ruled out of IPL this season. To fill his shoes, Delhi Capitals has announced Australian legendary batsman and an experienced player in IPL David Warner as the Captain for the Delhi Capitals in upcoming TATA IPL 2023 season.
2023 IPL Season and its expectations:
The players to watch out for this IPL season in DC are Mitchell Marsh, who is in terrific form in the recently concluded ODI’s, Kuldeep Yadav’s fantastic spin bowling; Prithvi Shaw at the top of the order, Rovman Powell, a hard-hitting batsman; David Warner himself is a fantastic batsman who knows the conditions very well.
