Victory lap of SRH

The Sunrisers won their maiden IPL title in the 2016 season, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 8 runs in the final. The team has qualified for the play-off stage of the tournament in every season since 2016. In 2018, the team reached the finals of the Indian Premier League, but lost to Chennai Super Kings. The team is considered one of the best bowling sides, often admired for its ability to defend low totals.

The team finished 3rd in the 2017 season on the league table. They played again the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the eliminator match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and lost by 7 wickets in a rain affected match. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was able to retain the Purple Cap and the legend David Warner won the Orange Cap.

For the 2018 season, the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were reinstated in the league after serving a two-year suspension from the competition due to the involvement of their players in the 2013 IPL betting scandal. The IPL governing council decided that a maximum of five players can be retained by each IPL team. SRH retained only two players and released all remaining players from the squad. David Warner had stepped down from captaincy on 2018 season and the BCCI announced that he will not be allowed to play in IPL 2018 following the Australian ball-tampering controversy. Following this saga, the franchise announced New Zealand captain Kane Williamson to lead SRH for the 2018 season. Much before the tournament begins, the England batsman Alex Hales was announced as replacement for the banned David Warner. SH finished the 2018 season as Runners up of the competition after losing to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final with 10 wins and seven losses.

Kane Williamson had a fantastic stint of runs and won the Orange Cap for his best figures in the tournament by scoring 735 runs.

Home ground: Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium Singh, Hyderabad

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is the principal cricket stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana and is the home ground of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. It is owned by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). It has a seating capacity of 55,000 approximately.

In 2015, the 40,000-capacity Dr. SR Reddy Cricket Stadium located at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh was selected as the secondary home ground for Sunrisers Hyderabad and the team played their first three home games in that season.

During the 2017 season, as the Sunrisers Hyderabad were defending IPL champions, they hosted the season opener and final. SRH selected their primary home ground in Hyderabad to host their home games.

During the 2019 season, Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium was selected to host the IPL final after the BCCI decided to shift the match from M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai after TNCA failed to secure permission to open three locked stands for the match. Hyderabad Cricket Association won the award for the best ground and pitch during 2019 IPL season.

SRH Coach and Captain:

Sunrisers Hyderabad has an issue with their consistency in holding the Captaincy for the team. David Warner was the captain when the team clinched the championship title in 2016 season however he had to step down as BCCI did not allow him to play in IPL 2018 following the Australian ball-tampering controversy. In 2018, Kane Williamson’s was handed over the captaincy and he did fairly good but there was no fire power from the captain which needed for the team to beat the title in his leadership. The team dynamics, aggression needed to win the title so Kane Williamson was released by SRH last year.

Aiden Markram has been given the responsibility to captain the side this year 2023 and hope he brings good fortunes to the team and the winning combination is set right for the SRH team much in advance.

Coach Brian Lara’s intellectual and experience could bring SRH into the playoffs in this year’s tournament alongside the most talented Muttiah Muralidharan, Dale Steyn and Hemang Badani.
